“VICTORY of TRAFALGAR, in the REAR”, Plate 4. A spectacular engraving by Robert Dodd, from his own painting, which was published by J.W. Laird, 1 Leadenhall Street, London, in 1843.

“This view of the total defeat of the Combined Fleets of France & Spain, with the Fenders of the British Fleet saving their conquered Enemies from the Flames of their own vessel (L’Ahille a French 74) is most respectfully inscribed to the Right Honorable Lord Collingwood, the several Captains, the Officers, Seamen & Marines of his Division, By their devoted Servant Rob Dodd.”

The Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805) was a naval engagement fought by the British Royal Navy against the combined fleets of the French and Spanish navies during the War of the Third Coalition (August–December 1805) of the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815). Twenty-seven British ships led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory, defeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships of the line under French Admiral Villeneuve. The battle took place off the southwest coast of Spain, just west of Cape Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost twenty-two ships, and the British lost none. Prior to the battle, Vice Admiral of the Royal Navy, Horatio Nelson, has sent his famous signal “England expects that every man will do his duty” from his flagship HMS “Victory”.

Robert Dodd (1748 – 1815) was a British painter and engraver, most known for his works on Napoleonic Wars, naval battles and actions, scenes of the river Thames and London dockyards. R. Dodd exhibited at the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy; some of his paintings are now in the National Maritime Museum. His paintings and engravings considered as technically accurate and meticulous, and an important contribution to the historical record.
