Description
“Accurater Prospect und Grundris der Konigl. Gros-Britanisch Haupt- und Residentz-Stadt London” – a famous map of London created by Johann Baptist Homann, engraved, printed and hand-coloured in 1730 in Nuremberg, Germany.
An unusual and decorative plan of Georgian London consisting of two parts. The upper part shows the map of the city that extends to London’s northern environs and includes detailed index to streets, markets, churches and other places of interest to a Georgian traveller. In the insets are drawings of the Palace of Whitehall and the Royal Treasury. The lower part shows a view of London from the South looking North across the Thames river with numerous buildings including St. Paul Cathedral and London Bridge.
Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a German geographer and cartographer, who founded the famous Homann Heirs publishing company. Initially, Johann trained to become a priest before converting to Protestantism and working as a notary in Nuremberg, where he has lived his entire life. In 1702, Johann founded a publishing house that specialized in engravings. The firm flourished, becoming the leading map publisher in Germany and an important entity in the European map market. In 1715, Johann was appointed Imperial Geographer to the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Charles VI and made a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Most importantly for his business, his reputation and contacts gained him imperial printing privileges which protected his publications and recommended him to customers. Johann is best known for this Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of the World) published in 1716. After Johann died in 1724, the business passed to his son, Christoph (1703-1730). Upon Christoph’s early death, the company passed to subsequent heirs, with the name of the company changing to Homann Erben, or Homann Heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
This poster is a high quality “giclee” reproduction of a restored antique original, custom-printed on Standard Single-weight Matt Coated art paper 140gsm or Heavyweight Matt Coated art paper 230gsm (more of a thin card density), or superb Epson Matt Canvas 320gsm, according to your choice. We use the latest UltraChromeHDX pigment inks which guarantee 60 years of colour permanence (up to 200 years fade-proof for colour prints). This poster is suitable for mounting and framing, as well as direct display on a wall.
IMPORTANT: If you are going to frame this print we recommend art paper 230gsm or canvas 320gsm. The 140gsm art paper option makes sense if you wish to DIY-frame or to tack the poster to a wall without framing, due to it being lighter and more flexible. All three options are giclee prints of the same high quality.
