“The Field of Waterloo June 18th 1815, accompanied with references & a memoir” – an iconic hand-coloured plan of Waterloo battlefield as on June 18th 1815, published by John Booth in London in 1816, in his work “The Battle of Waterloo, also of Ligny, and Quatre-Bras, described by the series of accounts published by Authority, with circumstantial details, by a near observer”. This was the most extensive compilation of relevant material at the time which went through 7 editions in the first year, and by the second year in 1817 the edition had grown to two-volume set replete with maps and portraits.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: a British-led Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Prince of Wahlstatt. The battle marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
