The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: a British-led Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Prince of Wahlstatt. The battle marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Willem Benjamin Craan (1776 - 1848) was a Dutch–Belgian cartographer best known for his 1816 map of the battlefield of Waterloo. As the battlefield lay close to Brussels, where many wounded soldiers from both the French and Allied armies were taken, Craan was able to interview wounded officers who had taken part in the battle. Based on first-hand accounts gathered in this way, he published his detailed plan of the battle in September 1816. The map was later reviewed and approved by the Duke of Wellington and the Prince of Orange. Emperor Alexander I of Russia was so impressed by the work that he presented Craan with a precious ring in recognition of its quality. Craan’s map is exceptionally detailed, remains highly relevant, and accurately depicts the disposition of the armies - in some instances even contradicting later historians.
