"A Ship Of War of the First Rate with Rigging at Anchor, The Section of the First Rate Ship" - a rare large engraved chart from "Cyclopedia: or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Science" by Ephraim Chambers, printed in London in 1728.

A First Rate Ship of War was a warship with 3 decks and 100-120 guns, the largest Ship of The Line. These vessels were constructed from the 17th through to the mid-19th century to take part in the naval tactic known as the line of battle, in which two columns of opposing warships would manoeuvre to bring the greatest weight of broadside firepower to bear. Since these engagements were almost invariably won by the heaviest ships carrying the most powerful guns, the natural progression was to build sailing vessels that were the largest and most powerful of their time.

Ephraim Chambers (c.1680 – 1740) was an English writer and encyclopaedist, who is primarily known for producing the Cyclopaedia, or a Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences.

Cyclopædia: or, An Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences was an encyclopaedia published by Ephraim Chambers in London in 1728, and reprinted in numerous editions in the eighteenth century. The Cyclopaedia was one of the first general encyclopaedias to be produced in English. The 1728 subtitle gives a summary of the aims of the author: "Cyclopaedia, or, an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences: Containing the Definitions of the Terms, and Accounts of the Things Signify'd Thereby, in the Several Arts, both Liberal and Mechanical, and the Several Sciences, Human and Divine: the Figures, Kinds, Properties, Productions, Preparations, and Uses, of Things Natural and Artificial; the Rise, Progress, and State of Things Ecclesiastical, Civil, Military, and Commercial: with the Several Systems, Sects, Opinions, etc; among Philosophers, Divines, Mathematicians, Physicians, Antiquaries, Criticks, etc.: The Whole Intended as a Course of Ancient and Modern Learning."
