"The Plan of Edenburgh Exactly done from the Original of ye Famous De Wit" - a historical map of Edinburgh Edenburgh in 1710 by Andrew Johnston and John Bowles, dedicated to the Hon. George Lockhart of Lee and the Hon. Archibald Campbell. Originally on two sheets of paper, engraved and hand-coloured, and "sold at the Black Horse in Cornhill".

The iconic 1710 plan / map by Andrew Johnston, The Plan of Edenburgh Exactly done from the Original of ye Famous De Wit, engraved and hand-coloured, with all buildings in profile and inset views of the castle and the city from the North and the South, cartouches with dedications to the Hon. George Lockhart of Lee and the Hon. Archibald Campbell.

Andrew Johnston was a Scottish engraver and publisher, active c.1683 - 1730.

Bowles printers - the Bowles were prolific English publishers active in London for over a century. The family business was established by Thomas Bowles in 17th century and transferred to his son Thomas II in about 1714. The core of their business was publishing and map selling and their shop selling prints and maps was located in busy St. Paul's Church Yard, in the very heart of the City of London. Thomas II Bowles became a very successful London print-seller and publisher, having expanded to various formats of maps of London and environs, pocket folding maps, British Isles and world maps, and a number of atlas projects. His brother John Bowles (1701-1799) started a separate map publishing and selling business and has produced large amount of new and interesting maps. In about 1753 he was joined in partnership with his son Carington as John Bowles & Son. It was Carington Bowles who further expanded the family business in 18th century and published updated maps of London and the world, and experimented with caricature prints. Carington Bowles was succeeded by his son Henry Carington Bowles (1763 - 1852) and Samuel Carver, who mostly used the existing plate stock for printing and selling maps in the famous shop.
