CAMBRIAE TYPUS, a famous map of Wales by Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius.

An iconic map of Wales from Gerard Mercator atlas, updated and published by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, first in 1606, and later editions. The text in map's vignette also mentions cartographer Humphrey Loyd and engraver Petrus Kaerius.

Gerardus Mercator (1512 - 1594) was a pioneering geographer and cartographer from Flanders. He was a man of encyclopaedic knowledge and varied interests, but primarily known as a maker of globes, scientific instruments and wall maps. Later in his life, he produced over 100 smaller regional maps for his Atlas Sive Cosmographicae, published in 1595, in Germany. This was the first mention of the word "atlas" as a collection of maps. The Atlas however was not selling well, and the copper plates of Mercator maps were later sold to Jodocus Hondius.

Jodocus Hondius the Elder (1563 - 1612) was a Flemish engraver, cartographer and publisher. He is best known for transforming and republishing of the Atlas of Gerard Mercator. Hondius has added 36 new maps to the new edition but gave the Mercator full credit for his maps. The new edition was a great success and was sold out within one year, and soon republished. After Hondius's death the work on new atlas was continued by his widow, two sons Jodocus II and Henricus, and son-in-law Johannes Janssonius. In all about 50 editions of the Mercator / Hondius atlas were released in various languages.
