A spectacular map of London by George Frederic Cruchley "Cruchley's New PLAN of LONDON improved including the East and West India Docks" published in 1832. Engraved and published by G. F. Cruchley map-seller (from Arrowsmith's) 38 Ludgate Street, London. This is a superb giclee reproduction of a restored iconic map of Georgian London by George F. Cruchley.
George Cruchley's iconic plan of London was first published in 1827 and then continuously improved until 1849. Unlike traditional guides of London this map included the Eastern extension with the Isle of Dogs and the East and West India Docks. The "Cruchley's New PLAN of LONDON improved including the East and West India Docks" was a hand-coloured engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen, and sold as a pocket map, folded in a slip-case with the publisher's label.
George Frederic Cruchley (1797 - 1880) was an English map-maker, engraver and publisher, based in London. He began his career as an apprentice to another great cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith. Cruchley has set up his own business in 1823 with a shop on 38 Ludgate Street, and then moved to 81 Fleet Street in 1834. His early work shows the imprint "from Arrowsmith's" indicating an input from his former employer. Later, Cruchley acquired large stock from Arrowsmith, and from George and John Cary, also famous English map-makers. The maps produced by George Cruchley are considered as "some of the clearest and most attractive London maps".
