"Geological Map of England & Wales, by Andrew C. Ramsay F.R.S. & G.S., Local Director of Geological Survey of Great Britain, Professor of Geology in the Government School of Mines."
A highly detailed and exquisitely hand-coloured folding geological map of England and Wales by Victorian geologist Andrew Crombie Ramsay, engraved by J. & C. Walker and printed by Edward Stanford in London, in 1859. This map contains an extraordinary amount of information and remains one of the finest geological maps of England & Wales.
Sir Andrew Crombie Ramsay (1814 – 1891) was a prominent Scottish geologist. He was born in Glasgow and started his career in business. A holiday interest in rock formations on Arran island led him to study geology. Ramsay was soon noticed by a famous Victorian geologist Roderick Murchison and appointed on the Geological Survey, where he served for forty years. In 1845 Ramsay became local director for Great Britain. He was chosen as a professor of geology at University College, London, and was later elected to the presidential chair of the Geological Society of London. Ramsay was known for his bold theories and often quoted as an author of the hypothesis that lakes basins could be formed by glaciers. In 1862 he became both a fellow of the Royal Society, and a member to the American Philosophical Society. In 1860 Ramsay published important book "The Old Glaciers of Switzerland and North Wales", and then "The Geology of North Wales" in 1866. In 1872 he succeeded Murchison as director-general of Geological Survey. Sir Andrew Ramsay's grave at St. Sadwrn church in Llansadwrn in Wales is marked appropriately by a large glacial erratic boulder.
